'Rouge Street' (Book annotation)

Thanks to Indre Balcikonyte-Huang’s translation that captures the suspension between magic and realism so vividly, Lithuanian readers can experience the harshly lyrical realities of Northeastern China through a rich, lively, and empathetic text. (Commendably, Balcikonyte-Huang does not shy away from rough expressions without puritanically softening the language, which is always a risk with Lithuanian translations.)

Richard Butterwick’s concise history of Lithuania is perhaps the first guide through the thick forests of Lithuanian history, written above all for foreign readers, who are often only vaguely familiar with it. Yet the book reads with equal ease, interest, and clarity even for those well-versed in Lithuanian history.
